Tomorrow's charity helps the unemployed today

Presenting the Best Office Support Recruitment Firm award, won by Joslin Rowe at the Recruiter Awards, was Tomorrow's People — a charity committed to tapping into the hidden potential of the long-term unemployed by getting them back to work.

Since its inception 24 years ago, it has helped 400,000 long-term unemployed people by advising them, building up their confidence and giving them skills such as CV writing and dealing with interviews.

Even when an assignment has been allocated to a candidate, the service does not stop there — the charity keeps tabs on the candidate to ensure their success is not fleeting.

Speaking about the charity's operations, Debbie Scott, chief executive of Tomorrow's People, told Recruiter: "We exist to help long-term unemployed people on the margins of society get and keep a job.

"There's a whole host of things that could stop them working. They could be in debt, they could have very poor educational attainment. They could have been out of the labour market so long they do not understand what employers want.

"We do it on a one-to-one basis and find out what it is that stops that individual from working. What would stop you working is not what would stop me working. Once we understand all the issues that person faces, we will work with them to put together an action plan."
