Look outside your usual box

I don’t think many people would argue that the recruitment industry is driven by anything other than the people who work in it. As some markets falter in the current tougher economic climate, canny recruiters are now benefiting as talented, forward-thinking and innovative workers realise the real potential and tangible opportunities that lie within the sector.

Like many other agencies, ABPM employs some fantastic staff and making the company an attractive place to work is something that we’ve strived hard to achieve over the years. We pride ourselves on embracing new trends and over the past few months this has been really enhanced by a number of new starters who have come from different fields with new perspectives, fresh ideas and a desire to make their mark.

It’s been fascinating to see the definite upturn in applications from people who don’t necessarily have the traditional background in sales that you’d expect but do understand our marketplace and how to maximise opportunities. I’m sure most of us would agree that a new approach is often most welcome, as one innovative idea can turn your entire way of thinking and outlook.

In terms of our own company, the main tranche of applicants has been from the property and creative advertising industries. On the face of it, they may not seem to be ideal bedfellows but we do share a number of key values and the same work ethic. Industries such as these rely on pushing the boundaries and employing an energy that not only meets but exceeds expectations. More often than not, tough deadlines and hard briefs need to be fulfilled — starting to sound familiar?

Across the UK, businesses of all sizes will now be analysing their strategies and working out how they can best weather the next 18 months to two years. We’re doing the same but I’d urge my colleagues within recruitment to also open their eyes and look to maximise the pool of talent that is now becoming available as these fresh minds might just be the perfect addition to your current team.
