Obituary: Medical and General founder dies at 79

Juliette Menghuis, co-founder of the former Medical and General Employment Agency in London’s Paddington Street, has died at the age of 79.

Miss Menghuis, as she was known professionally, set up the agency in 1954 with her late business partner, Ruth Meyer.

Medical and General dealt with nurses and medical secretarial staff, and was the first agency to have pharmacy and optometry sections.

A member of the executive of the Federation of Recruitment and Employment Services (FRES) for 14 years, Miss Menghuis also served for six years as president of the Institute of Employment Consultants.

While at the institute, she established a curriculum of training courses for recruitment staff.

Miss Menghuis worked closely with FRES secretary Major Donald Cropper, and together they went to Japan as representatives of the federation to establish links with the nascent Japanese federation.

After 41 years of successful trading, Medical and General was finally sold to Corporate Services Group in 1995, and now trades as Medacs Healthcare, part of the Impellam Group.

Miss Menghuis was a likeable and highly respected woman who will be sadly missed by her husband, Louis-Jacques Zilberberg, her family, and all those that came to know her during her long career in recruitment.
